Piti - Makuna menace

A recent hindrance to milky plants and fruits is the Piti- Makuna menace. Piti -Makuna is a white invading insect that breeds on milk eliminating plants such as the papaya, mango, custard apple manioc, sweet potatoes or even certain herbs etc…like a fungus eating into the leaves and the fruits of trees in many home gardens , vegetable plots and orchards.

It is mentioned that as far back as 1992 this insect was found in tropical Mexico which found its way into the Caribbean Islands. It was sparsely found in other warm countries but affected Sri Lanka badly from last year.
Piti -Makuna is carried afloat through wind, ants, in certain cases birds and human negligence.

At the moment the Agriculture Department is paying great attention to the elimination of this menace .As a home remedy the separation and destruction of the affected the branches of the trees from healthy branches and budding fruits is carried on .However cultivators are advised to contact nearest Agriculture Department outlet for effective treatment.
