Pres gets tough on errant candidates

President Mahinda Rajapakse has ordered the General Secretaries of the UPFA and SLFP to take tough action against UPFA candidates who are fighting against each other while campaigning for the upcoming polls, the government said.

UPFA MP Dallas Allahaperuma told journalists today that the President had made these orders to UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha and SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena after he had learnt of an increase in clashes against some candidates belonging to the same party.

With fears of an increase in violence prior to the upcoming General elections, polls monitoring bodies have urged political party leaders to arrest the trend with clashes among supporters of the same political party among the contributing factors of the rise in incidents.

According to the election monitoring bodies, PAFFREL and CMEV, over 50 percent of pre-election violence reported so far has been among supporters of the same political party or group contesting the elections next month.
